My Journey To The Metaverse Part 1: Getting The Gear

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This post will be the first of a series of posts about my journey in the metaverse and virtual reality after I acquired a Meta Quest 2 in late November 2023, with other posts coming out over the next few weeks.

It’s been said that only constant thing in life is change, and change has been a thing that I struggled with throughout my lifetime. While social situations and communication are still a problem to this day thanks to an autism diagnosis in the 90’s, there is one thing that I have done quite well with: technology (that right, my mother and grandmother consult with me on tech advice.) I also do a lot of reading on the latest trends in technology as well, namely while surfing the internet and reading books on that subject. In the years that I have been doing tech research, there is one new innovation that has caught my attention: Virtual Reality.

The virtual reality headsets first caught my attention almost a decade ago. At the time, they were way out of my price range, and required a compatible cell phone to use, namely the headsets made by Samsung (as of this post, they have not released a new headset in almost a decade). As the years went on though, the technology evolved to having all of the technology self contained with in the headset, but also requiring a special set of hand controllers (examples of these include the HTC Vive, Meta/Oculus Quest and PlayStationVR.)

With the passage of time, and the speed of innovation in the tech industry, the price of these headsets came down to the point that I was finally able to afford one for myself. After the pandemic hit though, I was forced to put that on hold while I took care other problems (as mentioned in previous posts on this blog.) After things started to return to a somewhat normal state, I realized that if I wanted to do this, now would be a good time to do it. It was just before Black Friday in November 2023 that I would finally purchase a 128 GB Meta Quest 2, on sale after the launch of its successor: the Meta Quest 3.

Now that I have had the chance to use this for a few months, I feel like now is the time to document my experience in the metaverse. While there have been a few bumps in the road while I was getting it set up, I am happy to report that my experience has been positive so far. Unfortunately I have so much to discuss, so I will be writing a series of posts to discuss this further.
