Authors Note: This is the first of a new series of posts where I will conduct a deep dive into my some of my favorite things. Today’s topic is Food that I eat at home or work. I will dive into what I eat when I go out to eat at a later date.
I have a confession to make in terms of food, and that is I am not one of the healthiest eaters around. I have gotten better in recent years, but I still have some work to do in that regard. In terms of what I eat at home, it usually depends on what I have in the pantry or the refrigerator. My breakfast routine on the days I work my primary job is at minimum a cup of coffee, and a pop tart (or what ever else I can quickly get my hands on.) On my days off, I will usually do some cooking, such as scrambled eggs and hash browns. In the winter, I add hot cereal to the menu.
As for Lunch, it also depends on where I am at. If I am at home, it will depend on what I can find, but it is usually something that I can do quickly. The menu ranges from a sandwich that I can make quickly, or I can fire up the stove to fry a burger. When I am at work, I usually eat a cup of yogurt, a protein shake and a bottle of iced tea.
By the time dinner rolls around, I usually make enough to feed my self and the rest of my family. What we eat depends on what I am in the mood to cook, and the options usually include scalloped potatoes, pasta, seafood, burgers or whatever else I bring home from work. Desert usually is Ice Cream or a slice of pie if it is available.
There is some food that you will not find in my pantry, and the big one is Pineapple, as my family has history of severe allergic reactions to Pineapple. The other notable item missing from our pantry is alcoholic beverages, as neither myself or my mother and grandmother drink. After years of drinking soda religiously, I gave that up last year in an attempt to get healthy, and have managed to stick with it. I usually drink an iced tea, hot tea or water with my meals whenever possible.
In terms of what I need to work on for my diet, the primary concern is not getting enough fruits and vegetables, and my lack of imagination when it comes to cooking. I plan to address this in a number of ways. For starters, I recently acquired a Ninja single serve blender, and will start making smoothies at home. I also intend to start cooking more at home, and will use a recipe app (such as Tasty or AllRecipes) to expand my culinary horizons at home.
